Protection Paladin

The undisputed king of AoE tanking and heroic dungeons, with strong raid viability.

How It Feels to Play

Protection Paladin in TBC is a revelation. After being a joke tank in Classic, Paladins finally have a real tanking tree, and it's glorious. Your bread and butter is Consecration: you drop it on the ground, and everything standing in it hates you. Add in Holy Shield, Avenger's Shield (your new 31-point talent that pulls mobs from range), and you've got an AoE threat machine that makes every heroic dungeon smooth.

The way you tank feels fundamentally different from Warriors. Instead of building rage from damage, you spend mana. This means you can generate threat before you even get hit, which makes pulling packs so much cleaner. You throw your shield at a group of mobs (Captain America style), drop Consecration as they run in, pop Holy Shield, and suddenly you have a death grip on threat for everything in the pack.

In raids, you're less dominant on single-target boss threat than a Warrior, but you're the go-to for any fight with adds or AoE tanking requirements. Many guilds want a Protection Paladin specifically for trash packs and add-heavy encounters. Your biggest challenge is mana management: if a fight goes long and you run dry, your threat generation falls off a cliff.

Deep Protection with 12 points in Retribution for Precision and Improved Judgement. Avenger's Shield pulls groups from range, Consecration holds AoE threat, and Holy Shield provides both threat and block chance. Remember that your threat scales with Spell Damage, so Prot Paladins want spell damage gear alongside tank stats.
