Fire Mage
A proc-based spec centered on critical strikes, Ignite, and Combustion for sustained and burst damage.
How It Feels to Play
Fire Mage is the crit gambler. Your damage revolves around Ignite, a debuff that stacks additional damage every time your fire spells crit. When you crit multiple Fireballs in a row, Ignite ticks for enormous damage. Combustion guarantees crits for a short window, letting you stack Ignite to absurd levels.
The rotation is straightforward: cast Fireball, cast Fireball, cast Fireball, Scorch to maintain the Fire Vulnerability debuff if you're the assigned Scorch Mage. It sounds boring on paper, but watching your Ignite ticks and managing Combustion timing adds depth. Plus, the proc-based nature means every Fireball cast is exciting. Will it crit?
Fire is generally the strongest Mage spec for raid DPS in TBC, especially in Tier 5 and beyond when you have enough crit rating to keep Ignite rolling consistently. The downside is that some early bosses are fire-immune or fire-resistant, which makes you useless on those specific encounters. You'll want a Frost or Arcane offspec for those fights.
Strengths
- Highest sustained DPS among Mage specs in later tiers
- Ignite scaling provides massive damage on long fights
- Combustion provides reliable burst windows
Pain Points
- Fire-immune bosses make you useless (Al'ar, Ragnaros)
- Ignite requires multiple crits to get rolling
- Scorch duty can lower your personal DPS
Demand & Supply
The premier Mage raiding spec from T5 onward. High sustained DPS with Ignite. Most raids want 2-3 Fire Mages. Limited by fire-immune encounters in early content.
Talent Build
Standard Fire DPS
10/48/348 into Fire for Combustion, 10 into Arcane for Arcane Concentration (Clearcasting procs). Fireball is your primary nuke; just cast it over and over. Keep Scorch up on the boss if you're the assigned Scorch mage (Improved Scorch debuff). Use Combustion to guarantee crits and stack Ignite for massive damage. Ignite is where most of your damage comes from in longer fights.
Stat Priority
Spell hit cap is 16%. Elemental Precision gives 3% for Fire spells, so you need 164 rating (13%). Spell Damage scales Fireball and Ignite. Crit is essential because Ignite stacks when your fire spells crit, and more crits mean more Ignite damage. Haste speeds up Fireball casts.
